your life is tucked safely away

So, I’m continuing to read the story of David in my communion time, and I’m at that spot where he is constantly on the run from Saul. And recently it was the bit of the story where Abigail keeps him from killing her stupid husband, Nabal. I find it sadly funny how his name actually means “stupid.” What did Forrest Gump say? “Stupid is as stupid does.” Yup, that’s Nabal.

Anyway, Abigail cuts David off on his road to the killing of her stupid husband, and as she is giving David reasons for why he shouldn’t end him, she delivers this little nugget of wisdom:

“My lord’s life is tucked safely in the place where Yahweh your God protects the living, but he is flinging away your enemies’ lives like stones from a sling.”

(1Sam25:29)

What a comforting, still-true-for-all-God’s-children thought — that our lives our tucked safely in the place where Yahweh our God protects us. He has us right where he wants us, always. He’s watching over us.

What a blessing. What grace.
